CATALOG No. 35 ^

FA&LEY { LOETSCMED MPO.CO.

DUBUQUE IOWA

Reaching out as with extended arms in friendly greeting and welcome, the charm of the
Outswinging Casement has persisted throughout the centuries.

In a great many cases, the sheer force of its artistry and poetry has swept aside all con-
sideration of the practicability and efficiency of Casement Windows as we have known
them in the past.

To combine this Charm, Artistry and Beauty with those more practical requirements of
efficiency, weather tightness and adaptation to modern needs, is the mission of Unipak
Wood Casements.

THE MOST MODERN DEVELOPMENT IN

WOOD CflSEfTlEnTS

DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT IN CONSTRUCTION, METHOD OF INSTALLATION
AND EFFICIENCY

(PATENTS PENDING

Discarding the old and customary method of fitting and hanging
Casement Sash directly to the frame with its thick mullion posts
and transom bars, Unipak employs an entirely different prin-
ciple, viz;: —

OUTER FRAME

^T The Outer Frame only, consisting of the minimum parts
necessary to frame the opening, is installed as the walls are
erected. The Outer Frame has no mullion posts or transom
bars. These are formed by Inner Units when installed later.

INNER UNITS

y^ The Inner Units, stationary or consisting of pre-fitted sash
with their surrounding frames, completely hinged and weather-
stripped at factory, are installed by merely driving a few screws.

Unipak is not just a new Window and
Frame. It is a new complete Installation
with all hardware and accessories supplied.

No longer need you be concerned about
the selection of a proper operator — how to
positively close and lock the sash without

screen interference — how attractive screening
and double glazing is to be provided — what
kind of weather stripping is to be used — how
the outside of the glass can be washed from
the inside of the building. These are only a
few of the problems Unipak engineers have
solved for you.

YOU WILL MARVEL AT THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS NEW WINDOW
YOU WILL BE THRILLED By ITS CHARM AND BEAUTY

UNIPAK CASEMENTS

Group 4402

Group 631 3
Center Unit Stationary

A FEW OF THE MANY POSSIBLE GROUPINGS

Unipak Standardized Units, operative and stationary, with
and without transoms, meet almost every installation re'
quirement.

Transom Head Units are recommended for openings over
three lights of glass in height. They add charm and protect
drapery valances and shades. When the sash are open the
shades are drawn to the transom bar line, without danger
of being blown and damaged by the wind.

Note particularly group 4313. This is an ideal and econom'
ical residential installation that lends itself perfectly to any
desired decorative treatment.

As the ventilating area of Casements is twice that of
double hung windows of equal glass area, usually almost
half of the units may be stationary.

WHY ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS PREFER UNIPAK CASEMENTS

WEATHERPROOFED WOOD

fo-n^t^uctt

on

Unipak retains those inherent superior qualities of wood
construction — its great insulation value, its freedom
from sweating, frosting, corrosion and scaling — its
warmth and friendliness, the simplicity of applying
effective weather stripping and double glaring.

All these are retained and by improved construction
and weatherproofing of all parts, a new permanence is
positively secured.

Frames and Sash are clear W. P. Pine. Sash are full
2" thick, glued with waterproof glue and pinned.

UTMOST

c

Easy control and positive locking of sash.

Extension hinges solve window washing problems.

There are no Storm Sash or Screens to fit, hang and
paint; to put up and take down every spring and fall
and repaint every few years.

LEAK PROOF

^L^CWLUlU^

We believe Unipak Casements are the tightest wiiv
dows irrespective of type that have ever been built.
There are no opening joints around transoms or stationary
units.

Operative sash are factory weather stripped with
improved compression type spring bronze, insuring
positive seal around entire opening.

Hinges — Extension type. Strong and attractive.
Applied at factory.

Sash Operator — A powerful "Under the Screen"
operator that automatically holds the sash in any de'
sired partly open position. Fully concealed, operator
crank only exposed.

Sash Lock — Exclusive semi-rotary type of attractive
design. Insures tight closing of sash at top as well as
at the bottom. Also automatically ejects sash slightly
when opening. Operates without screen interference.

Surprising as it may seem, Unipak Casements, with all
their charm, their sturdy construction and worthiness,
cost less than the cheapest type steel casements.

If judgment is exercised in the selection of operative
and stationary units, the installed cost of Unipak Case-
ments is very little more than ordinary double hung
wood windows.

OF INSTALLATION

Operative Stationary

100 Series

Operative Stationary

200 Series

Outer Frame — Installed as the walls are erected.
Factory fitted and assembled as shown above, except out'
side casings or brick moulds are not attached.

One standardized frame for all types of wall construe'
tion.

Only two vertical and two horizontal parts are re-
quired, whether the Frame is for a single unit or group in-
stallation, with or without transom. There are no
mullion posts or transom bars. These are formed by
inner units when installed later.

Inner Units— Above are shown standardized
Inner Units of the 100 and 200 series, operative and
stationary.

They are furnished in. various heights (2 to 7 lights of
glass high).

All Units are completely fitted, ready for installation.

Operative Units are hinged and fully weather stripped
at factory.

The ease and simplicity of instah
lation is graphically illustrated at the
left.

A hammer and screw driver are
the only tools necessary. Holes for
attaching screws are drilled at factory
and screws are furnished.

The entire installation of Inner
Units is made from the inside of the
building, perferably after the plaster-
ing has been completed and is dry.

PAGE FIVE

UNIPAK CASEMENTS

SILL DETAIL — Operator cover removed
Notching of stool forms enclosure for operator.

Heavy Zinc Caps are applied
to top edges of all operative
sash. Weather strip carried
around entire opening.

HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS

Hardware is of heavy cadmium
plated steel.

Sash Lock and Operator Crank,
statuary bronze over cadmium.

Hinges have brass pins and knuckle
washers.

Sash Locks and Operator Cranks
have drop forged brass handles.

Operative Units of the 200 series
have extension hinges. Close up
hinges are applied to operative units
of the 100 series. Extension hinges
are not necessary on the narrow units
to insure easy cleaning of glass from
inside of building.

Section — Plaster Returns

Section — Opening Cased

Unipak Installations are very compact. The distance from the outside glass to the screen is only l*y&". Greatly
improved appearance is secured by the deep reveals both inside and outside, and generous plaster returns may now be
had in standard 2x4 walls. Note the narrow line beauty of the double glazing panels and the Aluminum life time screens.

The attractive Lock is positive in action. It will
"pick up" the Sash and tightly lock it when Sash
reaches approximately }A" of closed position.

Double glazing panel, with nar-
row white metal frame, is re-
moved only for occasional clean-
ing between glass. Easily re-
placed in a few minutes.

Extension hinges make washing
of windows from inside of
building a safe, easy job.

heavily cross hatched) must never be changed and are always furnished in the sizes and profiles shown above.

The casing and apron may be any other design just so it is not less than 2%" wide. Stool must be lj^j" thick in order
to maintain proper screen opening in height. The plaster mould and mullion rib may also be changed in design but
their width must not be increased on account of space necessary for sash lock.

While units in the 100 and
200 series are furnished
both operative and stationary,
the narrower units (100 series)
are primarily intended to be
stationary in group installa-
tions. It is not advisable to
use them singly or to form
twin openings unless ab'
solutely necessary.

To illustrate — assume
a room requires glass area
equivalent to three group
installations No. 2312 and
ventilating area that would
be provided if three of the
units were operative.

Rather than make this
selection, it would be much
better to use two groups
No. 4312 with one unit of
each group operative. About
the same glass and ventilating
area would be provided and
a far more attractive and
economical installation would
result.

ECONOMY

In selecting Units for
group installations, bear in
mind that the ventilating area
of casements is twice that of
double hung windows of
equal glass area.

Consequently, about half
of the Units can usually be of
the stationary type, saving
the cost of hinges, locks, op-
erators, screens, and weather
stripping.

If good judgment is used
in the selection of Units, the
installed cost of beautiful
Unipak Casements is very
little more than weather
stripped double hung win-
dows.

All irregular head transoms are fur'

opening. The installation is of utmost
simplicity. After installing the stand-
ard Inner Units in the usual manner,
the opening is enclosed by merely
screwing the one section transom in
place.

Irregular head transoms are furnished
either irregular outside and inside or
irregular outside, square inside. Be
sure to specify which type is desired.

Transoms with square head inside
are not only the most economical but
the problem of applying draperies,
curtain and window shades is also
greatly simplified.

CORNER WINDOWS

Standard Unipak Casements are perfectly adapted
for Corner Window installations, popularized in re-
cent years by Modernistic style of architecture.
Standard units No. 241 with vertical bars omitted are
shown at left.

The versatility of Unipak Casements is almost
unlimited. Without fundamental change in construe'
tion, they meet practically every installation require-
ment.

As illustrated, the mere substitution of a stucco
mould for standard brick mould and a slight reduction
in width of sill provides a most effective installation
in stucco walls with returns both outside and inside.
Note also that this is accomplished in a standard 2x4
wall.

Beautiful Bay Windows can now be built at
small additional cost by using standard Unipak
Casement Units.

Details show end units No. 131 (one stationary

tive units No. 231.

IMPORTANT — In framing rough opening
headers for angle bays, note that measurements
given are on line with inside face of sash which is
2" inside of sheathing line for brick veneer walls,
while in frame walls for siding, shingles, or stucco,
the line of sash is $%" farther into the building.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR UNIPAK CASEMENTS

ROUGH OPENINGS

Frame openings accurately. See schedule of rough
opening sizes on pages 8 and 9, also installation details
pages 10 and 11. Note points from which sash opening
sizes are figured in relation to rough opening sizes.

In frame wall construction for siding, shingles or
stucco, the Outer Frame is nailed directly to the studding.
For brick veneer walls, preferably the frame is installed
overlapping the sheathing.

OUTER FRAME

Be sure outer frame is assembled absolutely square,
and that it remains so while being installed. Use sub'
stantial temporary braces across top corners. In squar-
ing, use a rod diagonally from corners. This is the only
proper way to square a window frame. Thoroughly
prime before installing.

PLASTER RETURNS

Jambs of Outer Frame form grounds for plaster returns
at sides and head. Note that plaster return is flush with
face of jamb at head, while at sides it is flush with rabbet
of jamb. This is necessary to insure easy installation of
Inner Units if installed after plastering (see details pages
10 and 11).

If opening is to be fully cased, note method of applying
grounds if narrow casing is used.

On twin or group openings attaching screws are driven
only at sides and head. None are required at mullions.
Water drips should be attached to bottom rails of sash
before units are installed.

The application of the narrow mullion casing and
transom bar drip mould which is cut in between mullion
casing, completes the exterior of opening.

IMPORTANT — Before installing Inner Units it is
advisable to attach keeper of sash lock to edge of sash.
This can be done more conveniently at this time.

INTERIOR TRIM

First apply sub-stool for each operative unit. It
should be cut in snugly between inside edges of inner
unit lugs and blocked level. Sub-stools are not required
or furnished for stationary units. See detail page 10.

Next install operator. Instructions furnished with
each operator. After installing stool, face trim is applied.
Before nailing in place notch out for sash lock. In-
structions accompany each lock.

IMPORTANT — As the opening for the metal screen
is formed by face trim, care must be exercised in applying.
The inside edge of the face trim must be flush with inside
edge of Inner Frame. (See details pages 10 and 11).

SCREENS

All screens are equipped with spring bolts in stiles.
Bore 5/16" hole in screen rabbet and tap sockets in place.

INNER UNIT INSTALLATION

Inner Units should at least be thoroughly primed in-
side and outside before installing. Preferably they should
be completely painted or finished up to the last coat.

REMOVABLE DOUBLE GLAZING PANELS

Install in rabbet on inside of sash. They are securely
held in place by small machine screws near the corners,
which engage metal clips attached to the sash.

SPECIFICATIONS

pak Casements as manufactured by Farley G? Loetscher

balanced windows, improved weather stripping, leak-

memory.

complete harmony with Unipak Casements and may be
used in conjunction with them. See Page 10.

"UNIQUE" SASH BALANCES
ARE USED

A simple yet highly efficient counterbalance, which
employs for its action, the torsion spring principle.
The spring is made of high grade, oil tempered spring
steel, with a slotted fitting at the bottom through which
slides a spiral lifting rod.

A true counterbalance, not merely a frictional sash
holding device. Fully contained within runways of
sash, requiring no pockets or special framing.

Painting will not affect its operation. Completely
installed at factory.

QUALITYBILT
WEATHER STRIP

Finest spring bronze, insuring positive
contacts throughout, is completely in-
stalled at factory.

Sash can be removed when necessary
without injury to weather strip.

Check Rails

Bottom Rail

Exclusive heavy zinc dust block il-
lustrated above provides three point
contact at line of check rails. Stops
air leakage at these points, also permits
closer fitting of check rails between
parting stops without possibility ot sash
dragging when opening.

FOR OLD OPENINGS

Qualitybilt Weather Strips are also sold separately and can be
quickly installed without rabbetting or routing. Strips and dust-
blocks are applied to side parting stops at factory and may be readily
substituted for standard l A" parting stops in old or new frames.

JAMB LINERS

All frames are furnished with standardized
jambs 4t%" wide for l%" windows. If wall
construction requires 534" jambs, 1 -^" liners
are supplied. Thus any width jamb is pro-
vided for without change in standardized
frame. Liners are furnished with inside trim.

JAMB LINEU

at a vital point.
